The design of the PCB followed by the fabrication and assembly went superbly well and now you have a working board. But if your product is going to be used in a harsh or extreme environment then you will be obliged to safeguard it from damage and increase the reliability by applying conformal coating. There are circumstances also when the circuitry is used in an environment where gas is involved; a good example can be a gas flow meter or valve switch. So, in this condition, it is critical to apply conformal coatings and even potting to avoid the possibility of explosion.
